In a message released on Monday, Ayatollah Damad referred to Pope Francis as “a wise leader of the Catholic world” and praised his efforts to foster understanding among faiths.

“We have received the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, Bishop of Rome and a distinguished leader of the global Catholic community,” Damad wrote. “Throughout his papacy, he advanced with a human-centered vision, a humble spirit, and a compassionate voice—working toward interreligious proximity, defense of the oppressed, and a call for global peace and justice.”

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, became the first Jesuit pope and the first from the Americas when he was elected in 2013.

Known for his progressive stance on social issues and commitment to building bridges between faiths, he played a key role in promoting dialogue between Christianity and Islam.
